Skilled Canine Companions

VetPets of SWPA is a veteran-led initiative located in Washington County, Pennsylvania, committed to preventing veteran suicide and improving quality of life through the training of service and therapy dogs. The program aims to create and fund three service dogs and three therapy dogs each year, fostering community connections that support veterans. Participants engage actively in the training process, which promotes emotional regulation and a renewed sense of purpose. Additionally, wellness activities and peer connection opportunities help reduce feelings of isolation and build camaraderie among veterans.

The program emphasizes community collaboration by training dogs in state correctional facilities to minimize costs and actively engaging in local outreach efforts. Ongoing education and support are provided to veterans even after completing initial training, ensuring they have access to the resources needed for success with their assistance dogs. By prioritizing continual engagement, VetPets of SWPA empowers veterans, enhances their emotional well-being, and increases community participation, ultimately making a significant impact on those served.
